The exhibition Frei Otto, Naturstudien. focuses on the experimental thought and working processes of the architect, artist, researcher and visionary. The aim was to understand nature, using its elementary materials as building blocks: Earth, water, air.
Taking an interdisciplinary approach, he examined the forms and laws of nature, letting them inspire him to create new ideas. He developed more than 400 architectural models: Design models for concrete architects and technical solutions as well as “thought models”, these forming a process-oriented basis for the technical solutions and aesthetic forms of his architectural works. The transparent tent roof construction in the Olympia Park Munich is a typical example here.
